Mumbai – Ratan Tata, the esteemed chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital. He had been undergoing treatment in intensive care for the past few days due to health concerns related to his age. On Monday, Tata had addressed the public, explaining that his hospital visit was for routine medical evaluations and reassured everyone that his condition was stable. Despite these reassurances, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing.
Following the announcement of his death, Mumbai Police officials were promptly informed, and security around Breach Candy Hospital has been increased. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, is expected to visit the hospital later in the evening.
Earlier reports of his hospitalization surfaced, but Ratan Tata personally dispelled the rumors, stating he was in good spirits and that there was no cause for alarm. However, as the week progressed, concerns over his condition grew.
Tata’s Legacy and Leadership
Ratan Tata’s influence on India’s business landscape is unparalleled. He took over the reins of Tata Sons in 1991 and spearheaded the transformation of the Tata Group from a largely domestic entity into a global powerhouse. Under his visionary leadership, the conglomerate made significant acquisitions, including Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover, establishing its presence on the international stage. By the time Tata retired in 2012, the group’s value had surged to over $100 billion.
Tata was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry in 2012, who tragically died in a car accident in 2022. Despite his retirement, Ratan Tata remained a revered figure in the business world, with his name synonymous with integrity, philanthropy, and visionary leadership.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow, calling Tata “a titan of Indian industry” and acknowledging his monumental contributions to the country’s economy. He extended his deepest condolences to Tata’s family and admirers.
Anand Mahindra also paid tribute to Tata, reflecting on his immense contributions to India’s economic rise. “Ratan’s mentorship at this crucial juncture would have been invaluable,” Mahindra said. “With him gone, all we can do is strive to emulate his example.
